missing send link

Posted

why did mozilla take away the send link option. if they want to make firefox more useful it seems a contradiction in terms to remove one of its most useful features.i mean WHY make it less functional?it seems crazyor fixing what ain't broke.loopy.

Chosen solution

hello, mozilla does clean up its user interface from time to time. user interface studies have shown that this context menu entry is only used by <1% of the users.

you could try the following addon as replacement: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/email-this/

This is crazy to remove a useful feature. I've got clients asking me what happened to the Send Link feature they use multiple times a day?

For now I have to tell them to revert back to version 15 and don't update.

Question owner

it's not as if one gets a choice, it updates without asking if you want to, but the file option works as well, but it's much more cumbersome, as is having to use alt to get the menus back. i never got asked if I wanted it to be more awkward to use; Firefox is not cuddly any more, which affects loyalty, but that's their choice, it's not the only fish in the sea.

I have discovered the same problem. I used the feature all the time. It was one of the most useful Firefox features. If its not broke why fix (screw) it? I understand it was the automatic update that did it.

How do I shut the automatic update off? How do I go back to the previous version?

It seems more like something Microsoft would do than Mozilla.

Question owner

my guess is that people like to tinker and wind up making satisfactory worse by fixing what ain't broke, but that's just the way of the world. when enough people moan a bout it they may admit they made a mistake- not common among humans, and get it right next time. it's a freebie so we can't really moan that much.

Question owner

every time I ad an add- on they update firefox and it's not compatible.

attempts to make satisfactory better invariably result in it's being worse, it seems to be a cosmic law.

You mean to tell me that less than 1% of the people that use Firefox do not put links in there email. Is this some kind of back handed insult to Firefox users that constantly construct emails w/o links?

I can believe that 1% of email sent have no links but not that statistic. These people must be really getting off on their little joke.

I would use a link here, but I am too much of a gentlemen.

You can turn off FireFox's automatic update process in Tools, Options, Advanced, Update tab.

Question owner

thanks I'll give it a try but they charmingly took away all the menus

Looks like I'm gonna have to use the older version of firefox to do what I want.

Stupid to take send link out, take something else out, like view backround image.

Question owner

thanks that works a treat

Agree with adlane. Who does your statistics? I send literally dozens of links to pass along information every freaking day. How crazy is it to have to get an addon to restore what was basic functionality?

Question owner

your answer lies in the human predisposition to tinker with the satisfactory and....... make.... it..... worse. why are humans like that?-don't ask me, I don't have a clue save that I have learned about it the hard_way and screwed up twin carburetors and.... the list is endless.

tinker for tinkering's sake seems to be the rule; but we are concerned with computery things, not the study of human nature which can occupy a lifetime.

Whoever decided the SendLink RightClick wasn't useful should re-think this decision. It is my most commonly used feature of Firefox and I miss it dearly. Having to search for an Add-in to get it sort of back is just plain stupid. Please reconsider and bring it back!. Let me say that again, please bring it back.

Question owner

couldn't agree more , but 'theys' never taken any notice of usses. I'd be astonished if a moziilla-ite read this stuff, but we would do well to remember the dictum "never bitch about a freebie."if we'd had to pay for it it would be different, but we didn't.

Just to pile on - it's one of the most sensible and time-effective additions to the context menu, one I used to use all day every day.

Suggest you add a setting to the user Options to allow some user tweaking of context menu, or simply reinstate. At moment this is a browser-improvement Fail.

Question owner

that makes no sense to me as one who understands nothing about computers

I've submitted the following two feedback items to Firefox:

Sent to "Firefox Made Me Sad" at http://input.mozilla.org/en-US/feedback#sad: You still haven't put "send link" back onto the right-click context menu - see bugs 239307, 786185, 800565, 803805, 804124, 804424, 805134, and 805949

Sent to "I Have an Idea for Firefox" at http://input.mozilla.org/en-US/feedback#idea: Put "send link" back onto the right-click context menu - see bugs 239307, 786185, 800565, 803805, 804124, 804424, 805134, and 805949

Feel free to do the same - you're welcome to cut-and-paste the above messages.

(Note: The reference to "bugs" in my messages has to do with Bugzilla, Mozilla's tech system for reporting problems - for information about Bugzilla, see http://www.bugzilla.org/docs/4.0/en/html/index.html - Mozilla is the parent organization behind Firefox and Thunderbird.)
