I accidentally turned off my back and forward buttons in about:config. The trouble is, I made several changes at once and I'm not sure which to undo.
I wish I could give more information but even the stuff I did was at the suggestion of someone else. I don't really know if the forward button doesn't work because I've not been able to go back since the change.

Do you keep history?
- Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
You can also check the setting of the browser.sessionhistory.max_entries pref on the about:config page to see if it still has the default value or 50.
Such issues can also be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: command+Shift+F).
If the menu bar is hidden then press the F10 key or hold down the Alt key to make the menu bar appear.
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
- Open the Customize window to set which toolbar items to display
- View > Toolbars > Customize
- Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout
- If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
- If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up
It's not that I can't see them, they simply don't function. I think it's because I may not be storing the previous page. I made the changes to speed up my firefox and removing that feature would certainly help speed me up but at the cost of functionality.

Thanks, I set it to 10 and it works again. It was set to 1 if anyone is curious.
Modified
You're welcome
Do you use or did you have used any extensions that may have changed that setting?
Nope, when I look for tweeks to boost my firefox load speeds I make sure that I'm the one that changes the about:config setting. This keeps the extension from breaking my firefox and allows my changes to be effective over the course of firefox updates. After about 6 years, this is the first time I've done something that I didn't want to do.
Always make sure that you understand what a pref is meant for before changing its value.
It is best to stay away from changing specific prefs that promise to boost the speed.
Some may work in some cases, but can have the adverse effect if other situations or may lead to sub-optimal settings in future Firefox versions if you modify them from the default.
