In firefox 14 on Linux, how do I restore normal bookmark menu functions?

I'd like to restore the normal function of the Firefox menus, to the default behavior for a Windows/Mac/Linux Application - where clicking on the menu reveals all of the valid commands as lines of text, with unavailable commands greyed out.

The "Bookmarks" menu seems to have been most affected by changes since 3.6 that were rolled out in release 4 or release 5. Sometimes, depending on the command you want, you have to trigger the bookmark menu dropping down with a keyboard command, and not the normal mouse movement.

I see tantalizing bits at https://wiki.mozilla.org/FX2_Visual_Update/User_Interface_Design, but I'm really looking for the User Interface design document that Mozilla developers follow, while the web page shows something more like the output of a design session.

So you want to get rid of the Firefox button and revert to the old style Menu bar? Just click the Firefox button, then go to the arrow next to "Options" then check "Menu Bar".

Some menu entries in the main menu bar are hidden if you use the mouse and only appear if you use the keyboard to open the menu (Bug 626825).
You can see the difference if you use Alt+F to open the File menu or other menus like the Edit menu (Alt+E) and Bookmarks menu (Alt+B) and compare that to what you see if you use the mouse to open the menu after you have made the menu bar visible by tapping Alt or by pressing F10.

  • "Bookmark All Tabs" (Shift+Ctrl+D) no longer shows in the Bookmarks menu unless you open the Bookmarks menu via the keyboard (Alt + B).
  • "Bookmark All Tabs" can be accessed via the right-click context menu of a tab on the tab bar.
  • "Bookmark This Page" can be accessed via the right-click context menu of that browser page.

Tyler, where is the "Firefox" button of which you speak? (I'm running Firefox on Ubuntu 10), and don't find the Options menu of which you speak. Is that a Windows convention?

I've also tried about:config and other places, but nothing is jumping out.

On Linux you usually get the menu bar and not the Firefox menu button.
If you hide the menu bar via View > Toolbars then on Linux you get the gray Firefox button on the left end side of the tab bar.

Ubuntu 11.xx and later displays window menus in the control bar at the top of the screen with the switch to the Unity window manager.
