How do I prevent Firefox from installing a new version when I click on the "Check for New Version" button? And why does it even do this?
I check for updates manually and this is frustrating because I can't stop it once it starts. There is no "Cancel" button or anything that will stop the update.
"Check for updates" does not mean "Install updates"

If you want to update manually then it is best to check which version is offered on the Mozilla server and not to check for updates in Firefox via Help > About Firefox.
- Latest Firefox: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
If files already have been downloaded and you do not want to install that update then remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.

Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)
Windows Vista and later:
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)

I do have to say it is kind of ridiculous for them to remove the "There is an update. Do you want to install it?" that every other application uses. Even FF plug-ins use one. Checking for an update should not automatically install it.
That is bad enough, but removing the "Cancel" button during the update download is one for the ages. Whatever happened to "user-friendly"? I guess they know what we need better than we do.
