Firefox 9.01 hangs every time I open it

I just updated to Firefox 9.01. Now, every time I open Firefox, it immediately hangs, and I have to force quit. I've tried restarting my computer, starting Firefox in safe mode, and uninstalling and reinstalling it, and none of these have helped. The browser is unusable at this point.

I even tried uninstalling Flash Player, because I updated that right before I started having problems, but that didn't help. I also updated Java today, too, but Firefox was working fine after that update.

Same issue. Running XP Pro SP3 with all updates. 2 GB RAM AMD Athlon-64 3500+ CPU.

It is especially bad when using the Web Mailer Notifier 2.8.3 plugin (http://webmailnotifier.mozdev.org/) where the browser becomes paralyzed and after maybe 20-30 seconds, it responds to a mouse click, but then freezes again.

I also tried uninstalling Java, Flash, Shockwave & reinstalling each; disabling all plugins, clearing the Tools==>Recent History & also Tools==> Options==> Advanced==> Network tab==>Clear Now Cache.

Also reverted back to version 8.01 I got from here: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-8.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US which gives no problems, again upgraded to 9.01 and same useless freezing problem.

I'm sticking with Version 8.01 and disabling auto update by Tools==> Options==> Advanced==> Update tab==>"Ask Me What I Want To Do" option.

I have been using version 3 for years, as every time I tried an update, it would hang. Same with 9. So I always had to go back and reinstall 3, where everything would be fine. 9 works on my laptop with Vista, and the new feature I wanted was the sync, to be able to sync bookmarks. Love that idea. But on my desktop with XP, could not for the life of me get Firefox to work with any version past 3.

Here's the solution that worked for me:

  1. opened the version that worked, and saved bookmarks to USB drive. That's the main thing I wanted in the new version.
  2. uninstalled FF
  3. manually deleted all files in FF and Mozilla folders on the hard drive, including any folder named "mozilla" or "firefox"
  4. edited the registry (read about how to do this properly elsewhere) and manually did a search for and removed every single instance of "mozilla" and "firefox" that existed on the computer. Made sure I did search from the top of the registry tree
  5. rebooted
  6. installed firefox 9
  7. imported bookmarks from USB drive

all works fine now! Years of upgrades not working, and a registry clean did the job.

Same issue. I did all the stuff markac did and it was better for a day, then went back to freezing for 30 seconds on start-up. I've tried taking out all the add-ins, using different start-up pages and I don't seem to be able to find a clear correlation or stop it. Past versions of FF did not have this behavior. I also notice that some web pages freeze for a long time before rendering and that rendering is jerky on some. I've become so desperate that I've been using IE occasionally. And for me that's desperate.

I am having this same problem and firefox is not operable. Can someone help me figure out how to download version 8 again? I used the link markac provided but it takes me to a page to download version 9. I am cautious about the random sites and mirrors that come up when I do a google search for version 8. Any help would be appreciated, I want firefox back!
