my MacBookPro track pad works perfectly in all other applications, but firefox won't respond to my trackpad 'commands'. How do I fix this?

i.e. using a two finger gesture to enlarge or shrink the text in the window doesn't work when firefox is the browser. very annoying.

Sorry, Firefox doesn't use that gesture yet. I believe it only supports the two-finger swipe for navigating back and forward.
