You are on version 8. The status bar has been renamed to add-ons bar, but the important thing to mention is that the add-ons bar goes across the entire bottom of the Firefox window. You can turn it on or off with a keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+/" -- which is the same as from "Alt+V" (View) > Toolbars > (check/uncheck) Add-ons bar What you see in the lower-left corner is popping in and out is a yellow bar that is not quite at the bottom, overlays content and is distracting. It shows important information such as the url of a link you mouse over. I don't know what you are used to before, so I will assume you just came from Firefox 3.6.* and had no problem with the Firefox status bar, if that is the case then see the additional information below line -- particularly item #10.
