Why does Firefox automatically download PDF files when using Mac but not when using Windows?

I am working on a website that has several pages and several pdf files on them. Every time I skip from one page to another, Firefox automatically download the pdf files, that are in the new page. I don't want that pdf files are automatically downloaded and I don't even want to be prompted what I want to do with these files ("Open" or "Save"). I have already tried to set this looking at Firefox menu -> Preferences -> Applications - > Actions, but no luck. The funny thing is that pdf files are downloaded when I use the Mac but not when I use Windows. Can anyone suggest? Thanks.
