Can't update to new version of firefox. Current version crashes all the time.

I've searched the internet high and low and the only answer I get is to uninstall the old version and reinstall the new version. I've tried that several times but this is like a virus on my computer. I can't uninstall it. Every time I drag it to the trash bin I get an error saying that Firefox can't be deleted. When I had a PC, I wouldn't use anything but Firefox. It's not great on a Mac...but that might be because I haven't used a Mac since 1994 (until recently). I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out. Thanks!!
