gxine starter plugin crashed
as above comes up when I try to play media

Try to disable or remove the Xine plugin and see if you can make Firefox use the Gecko Media Player plugin.
That plugin seems to be more stable and MPlayer supports almost any media file (MIDI is an exception).

Try Gnome MPlayer and the Gecko Media Player plugin.
Thanks...I have these installed.The problem occurs when I try to download certain podcasts for example,others work fine.I get the message that the gxine starter plugin has crashed.I have reinstalled everything however when I click on the gxine icon on 'applications' nothing happens.

Bingo!! Reinstalled Gecko and removed the gxine softwear and it works. Thanks again for taking the time to advise.
