Firefox on Lion is not recognizing the VLC plugin. I've attempted to reinstall the plugin, but Firefox will not recognize it. I've also verified that it is installed to the correct location (/Library/Internet Plug-ins)

Is that a 64 bit VLC version?

On a Mac, Firefox 4 versions and later are a 64 bit application.
Not all plugins support 64 bit and if not then you need to start Firefox in 32 bit mode to use that plugin.

I noticed that you're running Firefox 5, but I would advise to try upgrading to Firefox 7. Then re-install the VLC Application and plugin, and check if the problem persists. If it does, post back here and we'll all be happy to help.

Derp, it was a 32-bit issue. Thanks!
