Att.net is my home page. I have long used Firefox. When I click on the att.net icon on my opening page, this message pops up:

The proxy server is refusing connectons.
Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.
   * Check the proxy settings to make sure they are correct..
    * Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working.

I have no idea what this means since I am not PC proficient. I have had to returen to Internet Explorer which is not as satisfactory as Firefox was.

If a reply is sent, my only request is that it be kept simple.

Chosen solution

You can find the connection settings in Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select "No Proxy"

See "Firefox connection settings":

To: cor-el A thousand thanks for your help. The"No Proxy" check didn't work, so I fooled around with the other selections until "Use System Proxy Settings" did the job. I'm grateful.

There is no "tools" option listed in the Firefox pull down in the upper left corner of the screen----so this is no "solution" or help at all, and I have xp sp3

Are you on Windows or on anther Operating System?

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences

  • Windows: Firefox (Tools) > Options
  • Mac: Firefox > Preferences
  • Linux: Edit > Preferences

I don't know whether this is connected to the proxy server problem, which i had after AVG turned on the proxy settings in all my browsers without telling me. (Not appreciated!)

There is a website I want to go to but when I try to open it the server times out, the message on various browsers says "the site's server is not responding" etc.

However When I go to a cached version the version is from 4 October, for example, so how did the search engine get a look at a page on 4 Oct. when I couldn't??
