What happens to any active downloads, when I start Private Browsing?

Suppose I have some active downloads, from sites like Rapidshare. I wanted to know what happens to those active downloads when I start Private Browsing. As you may know, unregistered users of RapidShare are not given resume support, i.e. , the download if suspended or paused, cannot resume. This is a problem I'm facing. Can the downloads continue in the background, even when I'm in the Private Browsing mode?

No. All downloads are stopped if you enter Private Browsing mode via start Private Browsing.
You can try to start PB via Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

It would be better to use a separate profile for Private Browsing or for downloading those files.
