Tab groups seem useful, but would be more so if I could return to them or save them for future visits.... After closing and restarting firefox that is.

I usually use Bookmark All Tabs on the Bookmarks menu. This will create a new folder on your Bookmarks menu containing bookmarks to all the tabs open in the current window. When you hover over that folder, you will see each page listed, plus the option to Open All in Tabs. That last option will (I think) replace what you have open in the current window, so you might want to use it in a new window.

Bookmarks don't save session information, so it's not the same as restoring your tabs from the previous session.

Does that solve it, or were you looking for something a bit different?

That's a good option! Thanks I hadn't seen that tool before.

App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data in the file sessionstore.js in the Firefox profile folder.
You can make a backup copy of the file sessionstore.js
