You haven't described what you have done so far so I'm giving the standard procedures to follow. If there are problems please respond and give some details. I'm assuming that you have located the bookmarks.json file & don't know what to do with it.

Depending on which version of FF you are using

  • In 3.** choose organise bookmarks
  • in 4 choose Show all bookmarks

Select the Import and Backup menu at the top of the Bookmarks/Library window

Select Restore - there may be a selection of dates; at the bottom of the list there will be an option Choose File... Click on that and browse to where you have saved your JSON file. Select that file.

Dear IslanderCirce,

Thanks a ZILLION!!!!! i was stuck like in hell a few moments back....but now i recovered all those important tabs......GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!!

TC.

I went thru the steps just as posted, as a matter of fact did it twice. Restore, find file, json, etc. Still don't see any bookmarks. Are they hidden somewhere? I have FF 4.

Hi Mellyboo,

From your description it just looks to me like you don't see your bookmarks showing in your toolbars nor your Bookmarks menu on the Menu Bar. Restoring bookmarks is for where your bookmarks are messed up. Both the Menu Bar and the Bookmarks Toolbars are not displayed in the new arrangement in Firefox 4, see if pressing "Alt" shows what you are missing.

  • The bookmarks toolbar is not displayed by default in Firefox 4, to turn it on use Alt+V (View Menu) > Toolbars > click on Bookmarks toolbar if not checked.
  • If that was your problem or you want Firefox 4 to look more like Firefox 3.6.17 then see the following particularly steps 1-10 of http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface

I would suggest looking at the "Bookmarks Toolbar is completely missing from Firefox" topic in Lost bookmarks

See if you have your Bookmarks using the Bookmarks Sidebar ("Ctrl+B") where you should see "Bookmarks Toolbar", "Bookmarks Menu" and "Unsorted Bookmarks" each of which can be expanded or collapsed by the triangular pointers on the left of each. If you already have the correct bookmarks then restoring bookmarks would not help.

Hi, there!

I went to restore bookmarks, selected choose a file, found my file JSON, opened it, but it gave me a message: "The file is not supported"! What can I do in this case? I need my bookmarks! :s Can someone help me, please?

You can get such an error if the backup file has a wrong file extension or is otherwise corrupted.

Make sure that the file that you choose has a .json file extension (check the Properties via the right-click context menu) and is a JSON backup (starts with {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":).

I too have the same problem, after upgrading from FF vsn 4.0.1 to vsn 5 yesterday. I searched for and found the .JSON files, buried deep in my <userid>AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ etc etc subdirectory. They are named: bookmarks-2011-07-15.json and so on back for 7 days. But, like taniamoutinho, i got a "The file is not supported" type of message when I tried to import from them. So now I've lost about 50 or 60 bookmarks!!!

You need to use the Choose File item in the Restore menu entry to restore a JSON backup.

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore > Choose File

Note that this will replace all current bookmarks.
