how do I fallback from version 5.0 (beta) to version 4.0.1?

I would like to fallback to the version of Firefox that I was using until just a few minutes ago; so that I can enjoy the use of the various Add-ons that version 5.0 does not presently support.

Chosen solution

  1. Go to Download Firefox 4.0.1 and download the installation file to the desktop.

  2. Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to "Mozilla Firefox" and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).

  3. Then reboot and delete the folder called "Mozilla Firefox" at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

  4. Finally run the installation file you downloaded to the desktop earlier.

Your bookmarks, customizations etc., are maintained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the installation.

After you complete the installation, go to the Plugins Check page and update those where necessary.

That got it! Totally helpful - many thanks!

If you like, you can also go to the About page in Firefox, which I believe is accessible in Windows from Help > About Firefox... (if you have the menu bar hidden, you can press the alt key to temporarily show it). After it says "You are currently on the Your channel here channel", click Change. To get back to Firefox 4.0.1, you want the Release channel. Click Apply and Update, and you're done!

You're welcome.

Could you please click the "Solved It" button next to the post which solved the problem for you? This will help others searching for a solution to the same question.

Thanks.

The choice to change update channels does not appear in my browser -FF5. Is there a setting that would prevent it from appearing in the "about" box?

I too do not have the option to change channels. I've got Beta, 401, and Aurora installed. Strangely, on another machine, also with Win7-64 installed, I do get the option. I even completely wiped firefox and reinstalled (as I cannot get www.quidco.com to work) and even with that, I don't get the channel switch option.

The Channel Change feature has been removed from Beta, Aurora, and Nightly about a week and half ago. Apparently the users it was intended for weren't using it, and the decision was made to remove it.

They did leave the line that states which update channel that installation is running on, which is a nice addition and needed information.

I am running 4.01 (Windows 7, 64 bit) and I keep getting a popup which asks if I want to download 5.0 beta. Does this mean I am on the beta channel? If so I want to go back to the release channel as I would like to stay on the 4.x releases.

However, on the help>about screen, there is no mention of which channel I am on and there is no link to change it.

Any suggestions welcome...

No, it doesn't mean that. Firefox 5.0 was released on 06-21, just over two weeks ago, and that should be what you are being offered now. The indication of the Update Channel doesn't appear in the Firefox 4 versions, the Channel Changer feature is gone from 5, 6, & 7, and Update Channel indication doesn't appear in any Release versions of Firefox.
