Why can I not go to a site without typing .com .org .gov ect.
I understand it is some type of setting Why does 4.0 not have it? This is absolutely a deal breaker.

You can modify the pref keyword.URL on the about:config page to use Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" or Google's "Browse By Name".
- Google "I'm Feeling Lucky": http://www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=
- Google "Browse by Name": http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=

To return to the behavior of Firefox surrounding what you type with www. and .com, try this:
(1) Open about:config by typing about:config in the address bar and pressing Enter. Click the "I'll be careful" button if that comes up.
(2) Type or paste keyword in the filter box.
(3) Double-click keyword.enable to make it false.
Go ahead and test it. Does it work for you?

I should add: that works when you type one word, but breaks search when you type two words. There might be a third option, but I haven't researched it in detail.

Well yes this worked in a way, but not with the same functionality. This just seemed to add in www. and .com which is not what FF 3 has. the best summary I can find is "Firefox's Smart Location Bar will also search through page titles, allowing the user to type in a relevant keyword, instead of a URL, to find the desired page." from the FF wiki.
What I am looking for is easier in an example. In FF3 I can type in "TL" and nothing else. this will take me too www.Teamliquid.net. If I type that into FF4 it will take me to a yahoo search (my default search) of "TL".
If I type "TL" into FF 4 using the fix you provided it takes me to a restricted page called "www.TL.com"
I assume this is some fundamental change between the versions as this is the default of FF 3 and the reason I became a user.

The second solution seems to have helped almost 100%. There are still a few instances of the wrong page, but it is more than bearable. Thanks for the help and he effort of others.
You can bookmark such a web page if you visit it often and add a keyword to it via the Bookmarks Manager (Firefox > Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks). You can select the bookmark and click the More button at the bottom of the Details pane to make the Keyword field visible.
