Can't save files, or save pages, or "save as" from veiw source

For some time now, through a couple of revisions of Firefox, I've been unable to do anything resembling saving to disk without using DownThemAll. Can't download a file, can't save a image I'm viewing, and save a file by right-clicking on the link for that file (the menu is there, it just does nothing), can't save a web page, can't save code from the view source window. Nothing.

I've gone through the help sections' list of standard fixes, wich didn't work, and uninstalled DTA, which left me with no way to d/l atoll.

Isn't there just a line in about:config I need to tweak to fix this?
