Why am I getting a few little boxes like this showing up in various Internet posts, text, or articles that I read?
The boxes look like this . At times, I find a few of these boxes in text of articles that I read, and also in forum posts, but not always. I don't see them in anything that I write. And, they seem to be taking the place of punctuation marks, such as apostrophes, etc. Can you explain to me the how and why of this problem, and the way that I can fix it? I thank you very much!

Which encoding is selected in View > Character Encoding if you are on a web page that has that problem?
Sometimes it can happen if a server is misconfigured or content was copied from another (Western) source.
Can you post a link to a web page where you see this?

Open Firefox Options > Click Content > Under Font and Colors, click Advanced > Under Character Encoding, select Western (ISO 8859-1).
Other things that need your attention:
You have or had an extension installed (NET_mmhpset) that has changed the user agent from Firefox/3.6.13 to Firefox/3.6.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/3.6 XF_mmhpset ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729)
You can check the general.useragent prefs on the about:config page.
You can open the about:config page via the location bar, just like you open a website.
Filter: general.useragent
If general.useragent prefs are bold (user set) then you can right-click that pref and choose Reset.

barbara5600, Is your issue solved?
Hi, Did you receive my reply via email? I did do those resets in the preferences as you suggested. I had a couple of questions I asked. Should I resend that reply I sent and send it through this site's reply? I am new to this, so I wasn't sure how. So far, they still show; I haven't restarted my system yet, so maybe it will work after that.
No, it is not yet solved.

Yay!!! I no longer have the problem!!! I was going to find a link to send to you to show you where it was happening, but they are just not there anymore!! So, whichever step it was that solved it, it was one of them for sure. I have checked all the places where it was showing up but I have to say, the problem is solved :) Thank you all
I spoke too soon! I went to the following link, and there they were! I was so sad. I thought it was solved, but I guess it isn't.
Here is the link that I just went to and found the little boxes through out that text: http://earthboppin.net/talkshop/geology/messages/24237.html
barbara5600, it is your mistake that you marked this issue as Solved. Now no contributor will see this question because it is marked Solved. Not even I will help you.
@cor-el, well didn't I say the same thing about Character Encoding.
I am having the same problem with http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/03/12/japan-nuclear-earthquake/
I have tried many character encodings. Western (ISO 8859-1) replaces most boxes with garbage like žå¸¸æ„Ÿè°¢V2EX的译è€
