Try disabling the Ask Toolbar extension. Other users have reported that extension as causing a problem like that in Firefox 3.6.13.

If that isn't the problem, do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?

Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."
