Firefox toolbar icons gone

The toolbar is missing standard icons, so I can't print using the browser or access my bookmarks. I only have "back & forward" arrows, 'refresh", "stop" and "home" plus search fields.

I am not aware of having done anything unusual that would have created the problem.
