How do we setup the automatic security features (cache, history, passwords, etc) at closing ?

Firefox used to have steps to follow to setup security features at closing. Firefox would automatically follow those steps at closing (empty cache, erase history, passwords, etc.).

It is not present in .Options. anymore.

Please advise which steps to follow in 3.6. Thanks.

Tools > Options > Privacy, "Clear History when Firefox closes", Settings. The items selected on the Settings panel will automatically ("silently") be cleared when exiting/closing Firefox. Note: At the top of the Privacy panel, "Firefox will:" must be set to "Use custom settings for history" for all of the Privacy panel options to be visible.

The window presented when exiting/closing previous versions of Firefox has been dropped. The first steps in my answer will "silently" accomplish the clearing. The following add-on, will cause that dropped dialog (redundant) to be shown each time you exit/close Firefox:

Thank you for a very detailed answer on clearing the history.

Do you know how to automatically clear the cache after exiting ? I know how to clear it manually (tools, options, advanced) but you have to remember to do it.

Also, why would Mozilla do away with that function in the latest version????

"...why would Mozilla do away with that function..."

No functionality was removed; only the pop-up window on exit. Read in the first paragraph in my post: "The items selected on the Settings panel will ~~red:automatically ("silently")~~ be cleared when exiting/closing Firefox."

"Do you know how to automatically clear the cache after exiting ?"

. The cache will be cleared if you have "Cache" ticked on the "Clearing private data" list. You can find the location of the cache folder by typing about:cache in the URL/address bar. The location of the "Disk Cache" and "Offline Cache" folders will be shown. The cache folders location on my XP system is in the following path:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\YourProfile.default

In Windows, this folder is hidden, by default. See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders

This solution does not work for firefox OS X. There is no clear private history option. Is the cache always cleared on exit?

The problem with someone posting in a thread started by another user (the Original Poster or OP) is that we can not see information about your operating system or any information about your Firefox version and configuration. This answer works for the OP because we can see all of the information. The "paths" to the options is different for you than for the OP; the OP uses Windows XP and you use OSX.

The description to use:

Tools > Options > Privacy, "Clear History when Firefox closes", Settings

Is missing a step (for FF 4., Windows XP). It should read: Use:

Tools > Options > Privacy, History:"Use custom settings" , "Clear History when Firefox closes", Settings
