Thunderbird has stopped showing 'Copy message to'.

I'm testing in beta 155.0b5 I opened new message to create email The top menu bar has 'Options' > 'Send a Copy to' > list of accounts

This is rather odd! I am using the French macOS version of Thunderbird 153.1.1esr and when I wanted to verify your issue I couldn't reproduce it (first image) Then I switched my user interface from French to English (GB), opened a new compose window and this time I saw your issue: the "Copy to" field is missing (second image) The same is true for the French locales of TB 154.0 and TB 155.0b5

Thanks for your trouble -- needed and appreciated.

The 'Copy message to' has always appeared immediately below the 'Subject' line (but has now vanished on all new messages and replies) (with 'copy original message' on blank replies). I've looked at the top menu, and can't see an 'Options' choice. However, this set me off, looking at other choices, including ones I've never looked at before (I only go investigating when I'm forced to). I clicked on the 'Messages' label. It gave me a drop-down menu, which included 'Copy to'. Clicking on that gave me 'list of accounts', and clicking on the account gave me choice of folders.

So, that gives me a partial solution. But I would really like to have the 'Copy message to' back under the 'Subject' line. I also need to be able to stop it putting things in 'Sent'. (Perhaps that's switched off if you specify another folder?)

I'd like any other comments/thoughts you might have. Can you make suggestions to Thunderbird HQ? It looks as though there might be something needed here?

If you use IMAP then some servers will auto save anything you send in the server 'Sent' folder. For example, gmail will always put anything you send via gmail into the server default 'Sent' folder. So, you will always see the email gmail put in 'Sent' when using IMAP. Nothing you can do about what the server does automatically.

In Thunderbird - You determine where to put 'Sent' emails in this location

• 'Account Settings' > 'Copies & Folders' for the mail account

IF using a 'Sent' folder in same account then: Select: 'Place a copy in' Select: 'Sent folder on' and choose the mail account name

IF you want to save all sent mail in another account such as the 'Local Folders' select 'Other' and choose 'Sent on Local Folders' OR if a non default location - a folder you created eg: 'Sent 2026' Select 'Other' and choose eg: 'Sent 2026 on mail account name'

You have been in the right place but you left it too quickly: in the "Options" menu you should select "Sent a Copy To" > Account > Folder ...... (see first image)

This "Message" > Copy To > menu (or label) doesn't exist in the compose menu bar but only in the Thunderbird main window (second image) It serves to copy received or sent messages to other accounts or folders. Instead of this "workaround" you should use the above mentioned "Options" menu path to put a copy of your sent message in the target folder "Sent" as well as any other folder at the same time.

Now you may send me the Grand Cru .... 😀

In a new write message you are composing, below the 'Subject' line is the 'Formatting Bar'

Are you talking about reading a new email in the Message Pane ? I thought you were talking about when you are composing an email.

Maybe we are not talking about the same thing! ?? Do you mean:

• Cc (Carbon Copy)
• Bcc (Blank Carbon Copy)

That data would appear in the Message Header below the TO but above the Subject. In a new write message those options are to the right of the 'From' as per images posted by Mapenzi.

If you want a new Write message to auto include a specific email address already in a Cc field:

• In 'Account Settings' > 'Copies & Folders' for the account
• In the 'when sending messages....' section
• select the checkbox 'Cc these email addresses' and enter the email address

But I thought you were looking to select a folder to save a copy of the message you are composing/sending. Hence I said - "The top menu bar has 'Options' > 'Send a Copy to' > list of accounts" Your reply was : "I've looked at the top menu, and can't see an 'Options' choice". Just to help you understand what I'm talking about, I have uploaded an image showing 'Options' on the 'Menu Bar' in a new Write compose message window.

I've used Thunderbird since version 3 and do not recall a 'Copy message to' below the Subject. So, I wondered if you had been using an add-on extension as this does not sound like something added as default in Thunderbird. Maybe after the Thunderbird update the add-on does not work.

I attach a screenshot of a new message on there. You can see the 'Copy message to' at the bottom there. As far as I can remember, I've ALWAYS had that in TB. Now it's disappeared. I'm not aware that I'm using any add-ons.

I'm further on now, because I've found where 'Options' is, with the 'copy to' option. But it means 99 clicks (exaggeration) instead of just one. (And I still haven't found out how to stop it putting messages into 'Sent'.)

I have previously offered instructions on the Account Settings regarding Sent messages. These are instructions on what Thunderbird is supposed to do with messages you send.

In Thunderbird - You determine where to put 'Sent' emails in this location

• 'Account Settings' > 'Copies & Folders' for the mail account

If you do not want Thunderbird to save a copy then:

• do not select 'Place a copy in' - uncheck it.

IF using a 'Sent' folder in same account then:

• Select: 'Place a copy in'
• Select: 'Sent folder on' and choose the mail account name

IF you want to save all sent mail in another account such as the 'Local Folders'

• select 'Other' and choose 'Sent on Local Folders'

OR if a non default location - a folder you created eg: 'Sent 2026'

• Select 'Other' and choose eg: 'Sent 2026 on mail account name'

But bare in mind the following. If you are using an IMAP mail account, all your folders will be synchronising with the server. Imap accounts can only display whatever is on the server. Many servers auto save anything you send through their smtp protocol for the account in the default server Sent folder. As you use Imap, you will see the 'Sent' folder and therefore also see any emails the server chooses to put in that folder. Thunderbird has no control over whether a server does this by default.

which is the exact Thunderbird version on your Mac Book? Menu Thunderbird > About Thunderbird...

I've seen your screen shot. Are you sure there is no add-on installed in this older Thunderbird version? I have tested the macOS Thunderbird versions 115, 102, 78 and 68: unfortunately I cannot reproduce this "Copy message to" field in any of those earlier versions. Cheers

The 'Copy Message to' is not something I ever recall being offered by default in Thunderbird. In the MAC which is running the old version where you still see that 'Copy Message to'

• 'Settings' > 'Add-on and Themes'
• select 'Extensions'
• Upload an image showing what it displays.

Or you could look here - but obviously do it in the old version to discover what is allowing it to display.

• Help > Troubleshooting Information
• scroll down to 'add-ons' section
• Upload an image showing everything in that section

I know the author of the add-ons "Copy Sent To Current" and "Copy Sent To Current PWE" and have asked him to have a look at Roger's screenshot from 6:37 PM. He just told me that the "Copy message to" field was generated by an older version of his add-on "Copy Sent To Current"

So I downloaded and installed Thunderbird 91.13.1, created one email account and installed version 3.27 of the "CopySent2Current" add-on. When I open a new compose window I get exactly the same picture as Roger in his message from 6:37 PM
