Thunderbird sometimes defaults to TNR as the font instead of Aptos which is the font specified in Composition / HTML.
Most of the time TBird defaults to TNR as the default font. I have selected Aptos as the default for composing messages and replying. It's pretty annoying. Things worked OK for a while...until they didn't. Did an update mess things up?

The composition HTML font is explicitly for the HTML outgoing message. For a full understanding of fonts, see this article and post any questions.
