Can existing accounts be renamed?

Is it possible to change the account name in "Account Settings" without any issues and will this make the mail folders accounts panel on left of the screen show the newly entered name for folders and sub-folders under sent, archive, etc?

The reason I ask is because I think it is ok to initially name the account as whatever I want, as I think the account name is for my own use only, but I'm not sure if changing an existing account name may cause issues or if TB uses the account name for anything.
