Before answering the questions below - please check your Firewall is not blocking Thunderbird

  • Exit Thunderbird
  • Access Firewall - it might the default used by computer or controlled by an Anti-Virus you installed.
  • Set up Thunderbird program as allowed.

Please confirm you have done this.

then Start Thunderbird and see if you get proper synch with server. Can you now read selected emails etc ?

If still a problem.................. You need to supply information because I cannot see your computer. Q: What OS are you using? Q: What version of Thunderbird are you using? Q: Is Thunderbird in the 'Online' state - look bottom left on Status bar - does the icon look like a small circle with radiating semi circles ((o)) ? If yes then you are online.

Q: Are you talking about an IMAP or Pop account? Q: Do you see all your accounts and folders in the left Folder Pane ? Assuming yes: Please provide answers/comments to all queries. Q: When you select 'Inbox' can you see all the emails listed in the 'Message List' ? Q: Is the 'Message Pane' enabled ? If no: Using 'Menu Bar' toolbar OR 'Menu app' icon (3 lines) 'View' > 'Layout' > 'select 'Message Pane' Q: If you select an email in the list does it display in Message Pane? Q: if you double click on email in list - does it open in a new tab showing content? Q: does it show only headers but no email content at all - nothing - blank completely?

Checking for server connection: Q: When you start up Thunderbird does it connect to server and download messages? Q: When you click on 'Get Messages' does it download messages ? Q: Do you get any error message ? If yes, then type it Word for Word verbatim OR upload an image file showing the error.

Tools > Activity Manager Q: Does it mention trying to access server? Q: What does it say for the account name/email address eg:

  • 'Could not connect to server xxxxxxxx. the connection was refused'
  • 'No messages to download'
  • X messages downloaded

For IMAP - Checking delete: Q: In Account Settings > Server Settings - 'When I delete a message' - what have you selected ? eg 'Move it to this folder and select the server folder 'Trash on account' Q: What method do you normally use to delete an email? eg: right click on email in list and click on the top right trash icon eg: in opened email in Message Header area - click on 'Delete' button

Q: What Anti-Virus do you use? Q: What is it called eg: Bitdefender I've had one person recently say the Bitdefender AV is stopping the 'Delete' button on 'Unified Toolbar' from working.

Finally please test in Troubleshooting Mode In Thunderbird

  • Help > TRoubleshoot Mode
  • Select 'Restart' and then select 'Continue in Troubleshoot Mode'

Q: Can you select mail and read it and delete it using TRoubleshoot Mode?

Answer everything and this should give an idea of your setup and what is going on.

Normally, I would say if you see list of messages but they do not display content when selected, then Either Message Pane is not enabled OR index file is not synched up properly with the mbox file that actually holds messages. Usually that can be fixed by right click on folder, select 'Properties' and click on 'Repair Folder', if emails disappear then the emails never existed - but maybe there is more going on, maybe there is no synch to server, maybe the AV had caused a problem by trying to fix an email and ended up nuking the entire mbox file. OR you may have an addon causing a problem OR you may have an Anti-Virus causing a Problem
