Been getting a bunch of this, usually in my TB TRASH folder, I think from the Outlook online server.

The server couldn't retrieve the following message:

Subject: "Stephen Tanner"

From: "Not available" ("Not available")

Sent date: 10/31/2024 2:25:02 PM

The message hasn't been deleted. You might be able to view it using either Outlook or Outlook Web App. You can also contact the sender to find out what the message says.

What does this mean? Outlook or Thunderbird? What do I need to do?

9. You might be able to view it using either 'Outlook' or 'Outlook Web App': There are a bunch (10-12) of files in the Inbox on outlook.live.com. I don't know why they are there as I have TB set to delete them after fetching new mail. Confused

If you have an Imap account, then it synchronises to show exactly what is on server. So whatever is in server 'Inbox' should also be in imap account Inbox. Same for all imap account folders. If you downloaded and then deleted them they would disappear from the imap Inbox.

The option to download from Inbox and delete off server applies to POP accounts.

Account Settings > Server Settings Bottom right under 'Message Storage' There is a checkbox you can select 'Empty Deleted folder on Exit'

What OS are you using ? What version of Thunderbird are you using?

re : my TB TRASH folder

Is that 'TB Trash' folder just called 'Trash' or 'TB Trash' or 'Deleted Items' etc? Has that 'Trash' folder been renamed to eg: 'Deleted' ?

Is it the 'Trash' / 'Deleted ' folder in an imap account that's connecting to a Microsoft outlook server ?

  • Right click on 'Trash' folder and select 'Properties'
  • Under 'General Information'
  • Is this selected : 'When getting new mesasges for this account always check this folder' ?
  • See if a folder repair helps : Click on 'Repair Folder'
  • Click on 'OK'

Did a repair help to fix issue?

Have you compacted the 'Trash' folder to see if it clears old data ? Right click on Trash folder and select 'compact'.

re : You might be able to view it using either 'Outlook' or 'Outlook Web App'.

the word 'might' is just a maybe not a definite yes. I thought outlook.com deleted items from the Trash/Deleted Items folder after 30 days. I notice the email itself is a year old.

'Outlook' means they are trying to get you to swap over to use the Microsoft Office email client product called 'Outlook'. 'Outlook Web App' (OWA) means using a browser - logon to your webmail account to see emails on server.

It would be worth seeing if those emails really are still on the server - using a browser like Firefox logon to your webmail account to see if they really do exist. Report back on whether emails really are on server in the Trash.

In TB it is called TRASH but that folder appears to be mapped to \deleted folder in outlook.live.com (imap://dalewebb1%40outlook.com@imap-mail.outlook.com/Deleted) 4. Not sure if they correspond exactly to the list of error messages. If TRASH folder in TB is linked to OWA DELETED folder, shouldn't TB have pulled them down?
