Thunderbird 140.5.0esr - REALLY BAD
Yesterday, I thought I had my original problem with TB fixed by installing v140.5.0. Well, things just got worse.
While trouble shooting it today, it AUTO UPGRADED to v144.0.1.

This has been reported by others. It may help if you click to settings>general and post a screenshot of the 'update history' pane. Thank you.
David, here's a screen shot of the 'update history'. When I click on details, the pop up window is blank.
I have installed/uninstalled/installed/uninstalled/installed TB ad nauseam times.
But I think I have noticed a security flaw (see attached). If you check the box for TB to check for updates but to notify you for permission BUT leave the "use background service to install it" checked, the updates still get installed.
Right now, I'm sorting through 3K downloaded messages - the queue keeps increasing daily. I've been at this for 2 weeks now.
Also David, I am back with another install of 140.5.0esr and retraining my junk folder.
And since this is a new, clean install, I am able to DELETE messages [for the time being once again]. This is the original issue, since v139 that has sent me down into this abyss tunnel system in this rabbit hole for the last couple of weeks.
Puzzling, that screenshot indicates you were on 145 prior to 144 an then back again to 145. I also have that security setting, with no automatic updates. Again, puzzling.
I think you're saying that all is well again. I do hope so. If not, let us know. :)
I have tried various version numbers because of the inability to delete messages, to no avail.
Then I had this monkey wrench thrown in with TB having a default setting to OAuth2 for my ISP, comcast.
Then I had a blender thrown in with all versions auto updating.
Right now ----------- I'm on a clean install, again. And like all the other times, things appear to be working as they should.
Oh, and then I found out that there are multiple flavors of TB, ESR and Monthly. The "non-ESR" versions all deleted half my folders.
And I've come to the conclusion that the bulk of these problems are on TB.
But I'm not holding my breath that this current install of 140.5.0esr will hold.
I just need to get all the downloaded messages that I need to keep in to their respective folders.

Well David, I knew it was too good to last.
After my last response to you, I shut TB down and did a back up of the profile (140.5.0esr). Only ten minutes later, I powered up my machine, and I can not delete anything.
That's because the damn program auto upgraded to 144.0.1 again.
And HALF my FOLDERS disappeared AGAIN!
What is Mozilla/TB doing about this?

On one screenshot, it appears you went from145 to 140 to 145, but the other screenshot indicates you're using 144. Weird. Let me find someone with more knowledge on that to take a look.
I have tried all the 14x series and have had major issues with them all.
