I updated my version but when I log in it wants me to donate. Donate implies you don't have to if you want. More important, I've already donated. So why doesn't the damn thing let me bypass the request

You're right; a donation is not required. If that is a web popup, you should be able to ignore it, as thunderbird should be there. I regret you're having this difficulty.

Are you referring the start page shown in this screen shot? Or are you seeing a different donation message?
