items dragged to overflow menu pop back out, will not stay there - dunno how to fix this.
Hate the "puzzle piece." Involuntarily upgraded to 115.25.0esr and it lost all my bookmarks, addons, history. How do I know which profile was the most recent, before the update added a new profile? How do I find my addons from the previous version? history?

Hi, your Firefox reported numerous installed extensions. Is that after you reinstalled, or are they invisible in your Firefox right now? If they are invisible, could you check this issue: Extensions in Private Browsing.
Regarding profiles, you should be able to launch other profiles that were not touched by a version newer than the one you have now. Check the first section of this article: Recover lost or missing Bookmarks.
Manage Extensions is showing just what I have re-added. Not showing the list that I had previously. What is numerous to you? I had a lot of disabled ones.
Are addons stored in the profile file, or somewhere else?
I found a procedure for testing if a profile is the one I want - open it separately, you get two app icons in the OSX menu bar, and then look in the new one to see if the bookmarks are there. I found one that has bookmarks. I closed the first instance of firefox, and in the new one I made its profile the active one. Or vice versa. Something like that. the tab went away, maybe it was in the one I closed.
This update seems to have a different default THEME. Everything is dark background.
I HATE when some idiot changes the look and feel, it costs me many hours to fix things - because I don't remember how I did what I have done. I "set & forget."
WHY did it lose my profile? The "upgrade now" should warn you when that will happen, and have a downloadable instruction sheet for how to get the old profile into the new version.
I installed the UnPaywall addon again it opens https://unpaywall.org/welcome. It says: We're sorry but this website doesn't work properly without JavaScript enabled. Please enable it to continue.
so I installed Javascript and Javascipt switch. The latter gives File Not Found error when used on the Unpaywall page
This just sucks my life away.
First, it's not normal to have your profile changed during an update. Sometimes Firefox will notify you of a reason, such as, you are running an older version. But if you weren't notified, it may have been a glitch with a locked file.
Either way, are you in the correct profile now? Or did you create a completely new profile rather than finding your old profile? This is the first problem to solve.
Regarding dark theme, try changing your theme to System here: Use themes to change the look of Firefox
Regarding JavaScript, it is a built-in feature of the browser. Do not install any programs or add-ons that purpoer to install JavaScript. Also, do not install Java; Java is a separate program that sites no longer use.
https://www.tvpassport.com/tv-listings is not loading completely. NoScript now has a "(sidebar?)" notation which I do not understand.
NoScript also now says "Changing permissions in a sidebar will require a MANUAL reload."
Oh, you run NoScript? I missed that. It would explain why sites say that JavaScript is disabled since that is the entire purpose of NoScript. If you are starting over with a new profile, then your NoScript whitelist needs to be completely rebuilt as you browse.
Addons seem to have used all the space on the Toolbar, now new ones add into the Puzzle Piece. But I still cannot get anything on the toolbar INTO it - it just bounces out after being dragged. And what is with the cutesy fish on the overflow menu that won't accept anything...

Either way, are you in the correct profile now? AS BEST I CAN TELL - ITS GOT THE MOST BOOKMARKS, BUT THEY ARE ALL INDEXED UNDER 6 MONTHS OR OLDER. DUNNO HOW TO MOVE THEM "UP A LEVEL"
Or did you create a completely new profile rather than finding your old profile? NO
Regarding dark theme, try changing your theme to System here: Use themes to change the look of Firefox I AM USING THE DEFAULT THEME ::: > System theme — auto Follow the operating system setting for buttons, menus, and windows. >
SOME WEB PAGES ARE DARK, OTHERS NOT. DISABLED "DARK READER."
Regarding JavaScript, it is a built-in feature of the browser. REMOVED THE JAVASCRIPT ADDON - I THOUGHT IT WAS A TOGGLE. THE "JAVASCRIPT SWITCH" GIVES THAT ERROR I MENTIONED. Do not install any programs or add-ons that purpoer to install JavaScript.
Java is a separate program that sites no longer use. YES I KNOW

AFAIK NOT STARTED A NEW PROFILE, THE BOOKMARKS ARE THERE.
THAT FIXED UNPAYWALL, NEEDED THE SITE TO BE GIVEN MORE THAN DEFAULT ACCESS.
BUT WHY ARE THINGS LIKE PBS.ORG APPEARING IN THE UNPAYWALL SCRIPT LIST? STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT "SIDEBAR" MEANS.
> THEY ARE ALL INDEXED UNDER 6 MONTHS OR OLDER
Are you looking at your Bookmarks in the Library window ("Manage Bookmarks" or Command+Shift+O)? Bookmarks usually are not grouped by date, but are shown in their respective top-level buckets (Bookmarks Menu, Bookmarks Toolbar, Other Bookmarks). History is grouped by date. If you don't have any history from this month, then this doesn't sound like your latest profile.
> Overflow Menu
You should be able to move non-extension buttons to this menu. Extension buttons still cannot be moved to this menu. (Unless this changed in Firefox 140?)

I would gladly go back to the previous rev of Firefox, but the stupid update process alters the app file itself instead of installing a new rev.
Also, I like to put the rev number into the filename. This seems to eff up Firefox.
The strategy of making a copy of the app, before updating, does not seem to work. The copy doesn't have what it needs. Not to mention that changing the filename effs it up.

I don't know what UnPaywall does. You can check with the extension developer for those questions.
The Sidebar is the panel that opens (usually on the left) for built-in and extension sidebars such as Bookmarks (Command+B) and History (Command+H) and Synced Tabs. I don't know of a relationship between NoScript and the Sidebar.

That will only cause Firefox to reject your current profile and force you to start again. Did you check all the available profiles on the about:profiles page, as described in the first section of Recover lost or missing Bookmarks?
> THEY ARE ALL INDEXED UNDER 6 MONTHS OR OLDER Are you looking at your Bookmarks in the Library window ("Manage Bookmarks")? YES OSX MACINTOSH

ALL UNDER HISTORY, THE URLS I JUST WENT TO ARE IN "TODAY" OH CRAP, YEA, THIS PROFILE DOES NOT HAVE MY BOOKMARKS, JUST A LOT OF HISTORY.
SO I NEED TO KEEP CYCLING THRU THE PROFILES IN ABOUT:PROFILES... HAVE TO START A TEXTEDIT FILE SHOWING THIS URL & OTHERS I HAVE FOUND TODAY RE THIS ISSUE.

I DON'T THINK I HAVE ANY EXTENSIONS, AT LEAST NOT WITH BUTTONS ON THE TOOLBAR. I AM TALKING ABOUT THE ADDONS. THERE ARE 7 ON THE TOOLBAR PLUS THE PUZZLE PIECE. EVERYTHING BEYOND THE FIRST 7+1 ARE POPULATING THE PUZZLE PIECE AS I INSTALL THE ADDON
HAMBURGER MORE TOOLS CUSTOMIZE TOOLBAR DRAG TO OVERFLOW MENU IT POPS OUT, BACK TO THE TOOLBAR
Here is what the AI told me to do (after a lot of coaching)
To get back to the Firefox profile you were using before the last update, the main approach is to use the page and identify the correct profile, then launch it in a new window and potentially set it as default.
1. Accessing : • Open your current Firefox window. • Type into the address bar and press Enter. • This page lists all your Firefox profiles, including the one currently in use. The currently used profile will be marked as such. • 2. Identifying the Correct Profile: • Look at the list of profiles on the page. • If you have more than one profile, one of the others may contain your data from before the update. • You can sometimes get clues from the profile's creation date or name to help you identify the correct one, although it can be difficult to tell for sure. • 3. Launching the Profile in a New Window: • Find the profile you suspect was in use before the update. • Click the "Launch profile in new browser" button for that profile. • This will open a new Firefox window using that profile, without affecting your current window and its tabs. • 4. Verifying the Profile: • Check if the new window contains your expected bookmarks, history, and other data. • If it does not contain the data you're looking for, simply close the new window. • You can then try launching another profile from the page until you find the one with your data. • 5. Setting the Profile as Default (Optional): • Once you've found the correct profile, you can set it as the default so Firefox opens with it automatically in the future. • In the window using the correct profile, navigate to again. • Click the "Set as default profile" button for that profile. This will take effect the next time you launch Firefox. • 6. Closing the Old Profile Window: • After confirming your desired profile is active and data is in place, you can close the initial Firefox window associated with the old profile. • 7. Manually Recovering Data (If Needed): • If you can't recover your missing data through these steps, you may be able to manually recover data from an old profile. • You can find more information on recovering data from an old profile in the "Recover important data from an old profile" article on the Mozilla Support website. • Remember that restoring bookmarks from a backup will overwrite your current bookmarks, so ensure you have a backup of your current bookmarks before proceeding with the restore process. >>>
The about:profiles data needs to include the creation date of each profile, otherwise finding the right one is random. I don't even know if the order is newest first or oldest first.
re NoScript - it seems to display all of the "sidebar?" category scripts all of the time, even if they have nothing to do with the website being analyzed.
