reading old emails
I am using Thunderbird as an email server. From time to time I navigate to the 'roaming' folder and save the 'Thunderbird' folder as a backup. I could then rename the old back-up file to 'Thunderbird' and read the old emails. That has always worked in the past, but since I have had to change email platform that doesn't seem to work any more. So how can I set thunderbird to view these old emails?

Please clarify about changing email platform and describe is happening. Thank you. As a comment, if the old Thunderbird profile was created with a prior version of Thunderbird, there is the possibility of incompatibilities.
does that mean old emails are gone forever? because if so that could be very bad news.
No, just that profile changes could need to be managed. Post what problems you are having in detail and someone here will try to assist.
