Need help in adding my husband's email address in Thunderbird. I did get set up but now getting error message and not sure how to fix

This is the message I get when I try log on. The STAT command did not succeed. Error getting message number and sizes. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: [SYS/PERM] Your account is not enabled for POP access. Please visit your Gmail settings page and enable your account for POP access.

You need to log into the account online and under settings there is an option for IMAP and POP where you click a box to authorize use of POP.
