1)Why did my "thumbnails" to linked stories on my firefox homepage stop loading yesterday? Still not getting them.

2) I received a message a while ago that I need to update firefox or ti will stop working properly. My questions are: - when do I have to update by? - when Microsoft sends me a required update (almost every 3 months or so) they have to restart my laptop ... that wipes out my bookmarks. Will that happen with a the firefox update? That's why I've been reluctant to update.

I do backup and re-enter my bookmarks from a USB drive and reload them after a restart ... but then I also have to reenter passwords for several regular sites and it's a pain in the ass.

Thank you in advance

Regarding #1: I don't know.

Regarding #2: You should not lose bookmarks or other data when you update Firefox. Or when you do routine Windows updates. If simply restarting your system flushes a bunch of data, do you have any aggressive privacy/cleaning programs that could be the culprit?

It sounds like you already know how to make a manual backup of your bookmarks and restore that backup, but just in case you are using Export/Import, the steps for a manual backup/restore are listed in the following article: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.

Firefox also has the option to export and import saved logins through a CSV file -- that's an unsecured file which any program can read, so not something you would want hanging around for a long period of time. If you need to use that option, see:

Alternately, you could back up your entire active profile folder using the steps in this article: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. (Important: it's the folder under Roaming, not Local, that has the important data.)

Regarding the update timing, I think the deadline is March 13, 2025: Update Firefox to prevent add-ons issues from root certificate expiration.

The issue is you appear to be using Firefox 127.0. You need to be on either 115.13.0esr or later or Firefox 128.0 or later if you want your Extensions to still work, the message was not saying Firefox itself will stop working. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/root-certificate-expiration

What is the homepage?
The OP is likely referring to the default Firefox Home homepage.
