I have been using Thunderbird Portable on a laptop for many years. I not longer need the portable feature and I understand that it is slower than the regular Thunderbird. How can I switch to Thunderbird? And I need the method most suitable for 80-year-olds who aren't that computer savvy, please.

Okay, there is more than one portable version, but try this: - install thunderbird, open and exit. - click to windows file explorer - in the portable folder, look for the Data folder - in that folder is probably a folder named 'thunderbird' - open it - this should look like a profile. if you see a folder named imapmail and one named mail, then you've hit the gold mine. - copy this' thunderbird' folder and paste into c:\users\<yourid>\appdata\roaming\thunderbird\profiles - now, start thunderbird, click help>troubleshootinginformation - scroll down to 'profiles' and click 'about:profiles' - click' create new profile' - click next - enter short name for profile, such as OLDPORT - on same pane, click the choose button to locate and select your new profile that you copied in - now, click finish and launch

I received an email with some instructions that were a bit over my head. I followed them to the best of my ability, but did not end up in a place described in the instructions. How can I get more help?

You might start be explaining what you did and when your capability to use your computer for basic file copying and renaming was exceeded.

You might also advise where you downloaded your portable Thunderbird as David suggests there is more than one.

This is getting more confusing. I received another email, which also says I cannot reply to it. How am I to respond to the questions therein?

you are managing to reply to each response. Tell me how far you got with the instructions provided and we'll go from there.

But I can't reply to the messages I receive. I must go to your website to respond to messages you send me via email. Seems I should be able to respond to your emails, or you should be able to respond on this "chat" format on your website, no?

I got to the part where I was supposed to see folders with imapmail and mail. I saw only imapmail. Then I was instructed to copy and paste into some C prompt. I could find no way to do that, even were I to have seen both folders.

First,we use the forum as many watch and learn from the dialogue. This also protects volunteers from angry users who like to vent to people's private email address,

Second let's pick up from where you were. Go back to where you saw the imapmail folder. Write down the complete name of the profile folder in which you saw the imapmail folder, including it's location on the drive.

  1. now, install a new copy of thunderbird from thunderbird.net.
  2. ignore the request to set up an email account. close that tab
  3. now, click the menu icon (three short stacked lines) in upper right
  4. then, click help>troubleshootinginformation
  5. scroll down left side to 'profiles' and click 'about:profiles'
  6. now, click 'create new profile' button
  7. now click 'next'
  8. on the next pane, enter a short name for the profile, such as MYPROFILE
  9. on same pane, click the choose button and then locate and selete the profile whose locattion you previously saved
  10. then click finish and then launch
  11. you should now be using thunderbird with your profile from the portable version
  12. once satisfied, you can now delete the portable version

Each step above has a number. If you get stuck, let me know where you are on the list.
