The Bitdefender anti-spam toolbar is not showing up after the update. I removed the extension and added back, re-registered and nothing works.

I would like it a lot of bitdefender stuck to managing threats and stopped making this toolbar which fails on every Thunderbird update and sees their customers here asking why their product is failing.

Thunderbird is working hard to prevent an form of addon in Thunderbird that is not standard addon that can be examined by the addon developers to determine if it is safe.

V115 will not support additional toolbars as previous versions as the entire toolbar concept has been moved to a new developer standard. I would be guessing that the bitdefender folks will have to either give up, or release a standard addon placing icons on the Thunderbird toolbar and not having any external settings in bitdefender for the addon.

I suggest you use Thunderbird antispam tools, they work well for me. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-junk-spam-messages

I do use Thunderbird antispam, however Bitdefenders anti-spam although external works better. Together I get less spam.

I did email their support team, so it should be interesting to see if they come up with a solution. They still claim it works with Thunderbird which is again obviously not always true, and it is a service users pay for.

I would think that if the Thunderbird team worked with the Bitdefender team, a good solution can be found versus pointing fingers at each other. This never works with good developers.

I use windows and windows defender, so I have no iron in this fire. As I do not work for anyone in the equation it is not in my opinion finger pointing.

Add-ons have always been held to be the responsibility of the author to support. If they do not work, contact them. As this is an add-on, then the responsibility falls with bitdefender to fix it. That is why the Thunderbird add-on site has support links for all add-ons listed. Unfortunately bitDefender do not list their add-on and it is one of the reason I personally want the to go away. I just want topics like this to go away https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1218767 and later when they could no longer hide it https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/do-not-allow-3rd-party-add-ons-or-extensions-that-cannot-be/idi-p/35701

Their product is simply a hack no better that the malware they purport to protect from is my opinion. Modifying the application with toolbars and functions that can not be shut off from within the applications published frame work is malware in my eyes.

However as far as I can see BitDefender has no solution, or had none a month ago. https://community.bitdefender.com/en/discussion/97732/antispam-toolbar-on-thunderbird-115?adobe_mc=MCMID%3D19021892085066159723245361822990655490%7CMCORGID%3D0E920C0F53DA9E9B0A490D45%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1703288360&_gl=1*538od3*_ga*MTY5NzE2MzY2OS4xNzAzMjg4MjA5*_ga_D4JK29RRG4*MTcwMzI4ODIwOS4xLjEuMTcwMzI4ODM1OS41OS4wLjA.*_ga_6M0GWNLLWF*MTcwMzI4ODIwOS4xLjEuMTcwMzI4ODM1OS41OS4wLjA.

As I mentioned I did also contact Bitdender, I guess we have to be the middle men because users just want it to work. We have no idea if the issue is with thuinderbird, Bitdefender or both. Last time it happened I fixed it myself after wasting tons of time contacting Bitdefender and reading Thunderbird contributers possible fixes. Last time it was as simple as changing from IMAP to POP. I didnt really want to but it worked. There are many goood minds on this site and sometimes people can find work arounds without contacting the vendors.

As far as responsibility, Both Thunderbird and Bitdefender have a responsibility to the users. Thinderbird should ensure add ons are good and functional, safe etc. Bitdefender should be more responsive when asked to fix the issue. Just because it is typically the author that has responsibility that doesnt mean that is the right way to do it. Obviously that has not been working. Communication is key and that does not happen nearly enough these days. Its always point somewhere else and hope it goes away.

Is the issue with not being able to remove it with Thunderbird, or Bitdefender? I was able to remove it both times, but is was a pain. It should be click on click off...

In the meantime users waste tons of time trying t figure it out while many do nothing to correct what is a probably a simple fix.

Thunderbird does not support nearly as much email protection as is included with the Bitdefender program. Hence Bit defender has a seperate interface linked to their program.

I'll be working with Bitdefender and will post a solution if they ever get around to it. If they dont and thunderbird doesnt, then I will likely move to another email service rather than try alternate spam filters as when bitdefender ant-spam works, it works better than anything else I have ever used.

Thanks for the rapid response.

Thunderbird and it's developers do not, and never have, accepted any responsibility of add-ons that do not work. I though I had made that clear. Sorry if it was not. Regardless of your opinions they accept no responsibility. If that means you choose to change applications, that is your prerogative. It will not change the policy however!

I have been listening to users complain that Thunderbird has some responsibility to make sure add-ons work with new versions for more than a decade. That is fine, except the management team/Developers accept none.

Do you have a point? Or are you preaching to the choir out of some misplaced idea it is going to do something?

About the only thing it will achieve here is you will force my hand to remove your ability to post because you are willfully breaching the terms of use in that you are posting and not seeking support. I really do not want to do that. But it is entirely your choice.

From Bitdefender;

Hello,

Thank you for your patience and please accept my apologies for the frustration that we might have caused.

I have looked into the case and it seems that the situation is caused by an issue that has already been acknowledged by our development team. We are currently working on a fix that will be done by means of an automatic update and won't require any additional action on your end.

I will get back to you with an update regarding the fix as soon as we have one.

Thank you once again and have a nice day ahead!

Best regards, Ella

Thank you for the update.

2. Yes.

1. Thunderbird add-on reviews test that add-ons use acceptable privacy and broad coding standards. However, responding to users and proper function of the add-on is entirely the add-on author's responsibility - they know the goals of the add-on, the target user population, and the code.
