My person view is the profile import and export is fundamentally broken. It languished for a whole year preferenced off because they chose a zip library that could only zip files of 2Gb and few have a profile that small any longer with 15Gb gmail accounts proliferating. Even if it works as they intend you don't get any of the passwords or certificates the old way of copy and paste delivered.

My recommendation is open your new Thunderbird, open the troubleshooting information on the help menu an click the show profile button. Close Thunderbird Take your old profile folder contents and paste it into the new profile folder Restart Thunderbird and everything should be good.
