Firefox bookmark dialogue box not showing/will not bookmark individual tabs

I've had this problem off and on for the past month or so. I've read through every related question and tried all solutions presented without any luck.

When I press the star next to the address bar it turns blue, but no bookmark is actually created. When I press the star again it remains blue. No dialogue box shows up. When I right click on the open tab I get a grayed out dialogue box. I *can* bookmark several tabs at once, but that's it.

I've tried changing the preferences in aboug:config to true/false and back again. I've renamed/deleted the favicons folders. I've restarted both firefox and my computer. I'm running in safe mode with no extensions. This happend once about a month ago and resolved itself. Now it's back and doesn't seem to be going away.

Do you have any extensions? Can you create a bookmark if you press ctl+d? or right-click the tab then Bookmark Tab ...?
