unable to connect to server, authentication failed
I'm using Thunderbird already for a long time. Shortly after Google introduced the two step authentication I ran into problems with my gmail account in Thunderbird. (Not able to connect to server, authentication failed) I tried to fix by applying all tips that I could find, removed Avast securuty, reinstalled Thunderbird, checked for updates, checked Oauth 2.0 settings etc. Finally I have chosed another mail client for the gmail account that was causing problems and continued to use Thunderbird for the remaining accounts. Among these accounts is also my wife's gmail account. Now I'm faced with the same problem on that gmail account. Now I even tried to remove the profiles folder, de-installed Thunderbird, rebooted, downloaded and installed the latest version of Thunderbird. Then I tried to create an account for the gmail with no success. There are two different error messages (authentication failed or wrong password). Are there still things I can do to solve this problem?

Please post your Troubleshooting Information. At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button ≡, then select Help > Troubleshooting Information. Press the "Copy text to clipboard button" and paste the information into your reply.
There are two different error messages (authentication failed or wrong password).
With OAuth2 authentication you'll have to use the main account password, not an app password.

Correct, I have attached a screen capture of the error that occurs most frequently. The password that I use is the password for my google account.
Removing Avast probably was a good idea. And the server settings for the Gmail account look good.
Antivirus: Microsoft Defender Antivirus
Your anti-virus software is now Microsoft Defender, which is a very reasonable choice. However, anti-virus software in general can be problematic in connection with Thunderbird.
These are some generic suggestions to avoid problems with anti-virus software.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.
Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.
