Downloaded THUNDERBIRD just now. Couldn't get started ................ it won't accept my OUTLOOK password. (I stopped using FIREFOX ages ago as it was so naff............ is THUNDERBIRD of the same ilk?)

Outlook, is that some Microsoft software you have installed or a web site (thanks for the confusion Microsoft)
The new account wizard defaults to suggesting wrong user name of password if it can not connect. Depending on your choices of security software and you paid status with Microsoft the settings needed for access actually vary.
If you have a Norton Product installed it may well be the root cause of the issue. It tends to block the wizard as some sort of malware.
Are you accessing a office365 account? Is it a corp[orate or professional account with modern authentication? Or just a bog standard free one which uses password authentication?
