application is extremely slow to respond when viewing Unified Folders. "Not Responding" warning and 10-20 seconds to open any individual email, longer to search.
Thunderbird 102.4.1 (64-bit) Microsoft Windows 10 Pro x64-based PC

For several years I have used Thunderbird to manage 5 email accounts which I view using Unified Folders
~ 1 week ago the application began to exhibit extended lag -- "Not Responding" warning and 10-20 seconds to open any individual email, longer to search. The application never crashes -- just takes a very long time to respond for each action.
Things I have tried so far, per review of other threads:
1. Installing a previous version of Thunderbird and setting up my accounts anew. This does not fix the issue.
2. Opening Thunderbird in Troubleshoot Mode. The issue is not fixed in Troubleshoot Mode.
I then tried setting up different subsets of the five accounts I typically view in Unified Folders -- for example just 2 of them at a time. The slowness goes away if I exclude one account but set up all the others. The account associated with the slowness is a standard personal @gmail.com account.
I am not aware of any change in that account that coincides with when this issue began 1 week ago.
Currently, Thunderbird is not usable in Unified Folders mode.
Any ideas of how to fix this?
Thanks.

Are both Trash and Spam folders empty?
- Please start *Windows'* in safe mode with networking enabled
win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode
- Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in Troubleshoot mode
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-mode-thunderbird
Does problem go away?
1. Deleted all messages from Trash and Spam folders in all accounts.
2. Restarted Windows in safe mode with network enabled.
3. Started Thunderbird in Troubleshoot mode.
4. The problem persists.
5. I then tried the same process but starting Windows in safe mode with network disabled -- then the problem goes away and Unified Folders functions normally.
What do this mean?
Thanks for the help.
