Vanishing account
Dear All,
this is happening to me for the third time: one of my two e-mail accounts has vanished and I am terribly disappointed.
The only help I have been able to find is here but the instructions given are incomprehensible to me.
I can see that I still have two profiles after running %APPDATA% but have no confidence in my moving/renaming things without messing up everything. Setting up the account again is a dreadful chore because it is a university account which requires dozens of tricks and magic words.
I would appreciate any help and tips on how to avoid this recurring problem. Many thanks,
tiha

So it is very unlikely to have anything to do with your profile. That would see everything including all mail accounts, calendars and contact to go missing so you had to set up your whole Thunderbird from scratch, starting with adding your email accounts.
Therefore none of the instructions you have found need to be comprehensible as they are I would guess not relevant here.
Far more likely is something post update has prevented the account from actually functioning. This can lead to an apparent loss of mail as IMAP accounts try and contact the mail server, can not so remove most of the account folders and all of the mail.
SO I looked at your past question https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1307744 is this one of the "This is happening to me for the third time"
In the first instance, you should be checking to see if Thunderbird has your account configured. So right click any of the accounts shown in the folder pane and select settings. Is your account listed there? If it is then I would generally expect some sort of error message to occur and you to be notified of a problem.
There are a couple of standard diagnostic process to try if Thunderbird can not connect. The simplest is restart Thunderbird in Troubleshoot mode
If that does not see a resumption of connectivity there is the process of restarting the device in safe mode to see if the issue is in Thunderbird or the operating system environment (ESET again perhaps). You appear to be using windows 10, Microsoft offer instruction here for doing that.
So the questions are;
1. Do you see any error messages? (we only know what you tell us. The more precise you are the more likely we will be to be able to help you.) 2. Is the account that is "lost" listed in account settings? 3. Do things work in Troubleshooting mode? 4. Do things work in the operating system safe mode? 5. Do things work in the operating system safe mode and Thunderbird troubleshoot mode at the same time?
Hello Matt,
many thanks fore the help. To your questions:
1) I see no error messages. 2) The lost account is not visible in account settings. 3) Things work fine (in the remaining account) while in Troubleshooting mode. 4-5) I am trying to figure out what the operating system safe mode is.
Best regards, tiha
