Chosen solution

Right-click at top of screen in THunderbird and tick Menu Bar. Then those options become visible.

Not positive, but I think View>Layout>Vertical will achieve that objective. Also, tick View>Layout>Folders and View>Layout>Message View.

I'm totally new with T-Bird David... I cannot even see that sequence, view etc. !
