Do you see any error messages. We know exactly what you tell us, nothing more. So the mail provider you are using, your anti virus solution and the error messages are really quite important information if you want someone to do more than guess.
No error messages have it on 2 computers. Jim - jsa@hevanet.com
re :I cannot edit change or enter a new email address,
You need to provide information on what it is you are doing. Are you talking about the 'Address Book' ? Please state exactly what you are doing. For example: Have you added a contact to an address book and got the email address wrong, so you are trying to edit the contact email address ? Do you want to add a contact to an address book, but it is not working?
Are you talking about creating a new mail account ?
Are you trying to create a new mail account for an existing email address ? Perhaps an email address given to you by your ISP.
Menu icon > New > Existing Mail Account
Tell us exactly what you are doing step by step.
I'm in the process of exporting all the address info and down loading a fresh version of T Bird.
There must be a reason why you are exporting all the address books ? It seems odd to just export address books because you want to reinstall a fresh version of Thunderbird. So I'm making an educated leap here................
Q: Are you wanting to get a copy of everything which is on an old computer and put it onto a new computer? If yes, : Q: Are the computers the same Operating System eg: both computers are Windows OS
Q: what version of Thunderbird is running on the old computer ? Because ideally, you want to be using the same version on the new computer. Make sure the old computer is up to date. At the moment, you may find you are still using 91* because thunderbird is not auto updating to version 102* as there are a few gremlins to sort out.
That means you need to download whatever version you are using on old computer. If you are using: 91.11.0 Then get a download from here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/91.11.0/ select 'win64' for Windows 64 bit and then choose prefered language eg: en-GB is English British Then you can download the file : 'Thunderbird Setup 91.11.0.exe'
It may get downloaded to the 'Downloads' folder. Once it is properly downloaded click on it to start installation.
Q: If not version 91.11.0 - Tell us what version is on old computer, so we can tell you how to get same version on new computer.
How To create a backup of your current Thunderbird including all profiles, mail accounts. emails, address books etc etc and use it on another computer:
On old computer: I'm presuming you have Thunderbird profiles in the default location and I'm presuming you are using Windows OS.
If Thunderbird is running, you can use it to access profile:
- Menu icon > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
- Under 'Application Basics' - half way - Profile folders - click on 'Open Folder' see image below as guide.
a new window opens showing the contents of your profile name folder
- Exit Thunderbird now - this is important.
- Go up the directory three levels until you are in the 'Roaming' folder - see image below as guide.
- Right click on the 'Thunderbird' folder and select 'Copy'
- Then Paste that folder onto a suitable drive for moving between computers.
On New computer: Install same version of Thunderbird as used on other computer, but do not run it. Do not bother creating profiles, mail accounts etc because you are about to use all your data from old computer. That includes all the address books.
In bottom window search type: %Appdata% select the '%Appdata%' file folder option Select the 'Roaming' folder. If you see a folder called 'Thunderbird' - delete it. Now get a copy of the 'Thunderbird' folder which you copied from old computer. Paste it into the 'Roaming' folder. Start Thunderbird.
That would install everything. You would be running a duplicate Thunderbird.
If you have already set up Thunderbird on new computer and you are just trying to get address books moved over: I'm presuming you did not simply copy the old Thunderbird and put it onto the new computer as mentioned in previous comment.
This is the sort of information you should mention - Did you export the address books from Thunderbird on old computer ? What format are the address book saved as? eg: LDIF or .csv Did you do this: On old computer - start Thunderbird, access the 'Address Book' and then export each address book as LDIF or .csv files ?
However, you might not be talking about address books which you exported from Thunderbird on old computer. Did you export them from gmail contacts ? Did you export them from another email client as .csv files ? Where did you export the address book from?
I need some help. Hope this is the correct place. I cannot edit anything on my address book. The contact comes up, but when I click edit nothing happens.
I can add new contacts and then can edit that, but cannot edit any of my old contacts in my address book that had already been there before the lastes update.
I have not done any edits in the address book since what looks like a new version or update was done. I hope I can find a way to fix this without having to add back or do new contacts for each person in my address book.
I also cannot seem to find anything in the help section that addresses just this issue.
Thanks.
