SMPT Error when trying to email with thunderbird from my Boston University account. They clam they recently changed the SMPT server and that they do not support Thundebird and I will have to use Outlook.
I cannot send email from thunderbird from my Boston University account. They clam they recently changed the SMPT server and that they do not support Thundebird and I will have to use Outlook. One would hope that IT "professionals" could figure how to configure the settings for the new server. I am using: Port 587, connection security SSL/TLS, Authentication OAuth2. Any suggestions for this situation?
Chosen solution
It is possible for BU admin to deliberately switch off the option to use imap and smtp, but I've not come across admin only switching off the smtp.
Usually, Port 587 uses Connection Security: STARTTLS So, first I would try changing SSL/TLS to STARTTLS then restart Thunderbird.

Wow! Brilliant, this worked Thank you so much Rick
I notice BU have got some deals with microsoft regarding outlook and office, but it's worrying they do not know their own smtp server settings. But it would be helpful to people like yourself, if their own website was more accurate. It does not mention using STARTTLS.
I have come across many cases where the 'techie' help says they do not support Thunderbird. What they really mean is they have no idea on how imap and smtp work as they are only concerned with people who use the webmail access. What they do know is that Outlook email client would set everything up automatically because it's accessing it's own servers.
Anyway, it's Good to hear you are up and running again.
Do you mind if I forward your email to the IT department at BU. I did send them a fairly scathing email:
