What does this symbol (folder with an up arrow) mean on a local folder? and why is it appearing?

Good evening,

Since updating to tbird v. 91.2.1 (32-bit), I have noticed an issue that I have never encountered before.

Some of my local folders now exhibit an icon (folder with an up arrow)--and I don't know why. The Lodge and RCB folders are one example (see attachment).

When I send (or reply) to a message, sometimes I will choose to save a copy saved to a particular local folder found in my local folders directory. I believe that when I do that, it converts that particular local folder folder to one that now has an arrow.

My reason for that belief, is that I had a particular folder (which you don't see) which would convert to a folder with an up arrow. It was a particular folder that I always chose to have particular messages or replies to messages, saved to. The protocol I would follow is that after composing the message or reply (usually offline), I would then go to message|copy to >| and then choose the local folder to save the message to.

To get around that, I created a new subfolder in my local folders directory. I would then find that this folder would convert to a folder with an up arrow. When that happens, I can no longer same sent messages to that particular folder by using the protocol noted above. When I choose to save a copy to the converted local folder, it no longer appears as a choice.

The message does appear in my sent folder; but for whatever reason, I cannot copy it to the local folder that I had chosen to save it in.

I have never had this issued before. In the past, whenever I sent a message, I could also choose to have a copy saved in the folder of my choosing.

If the local folder has the icon I described above, then I cannot choose to have a message saved to that particular local folder.

I have searched through the knowledge base prior to reaching out to support.

Thank you for your assistance.

The icon is the outbox icon, so Thunderbird has decided those folders contain mail pending being sent.

To correct it. goto the addons manager in the tools menu. In search search for FolderFlags and add it to Thunderbird.

Once the addon is installed. Right click the folders with the odd icons. (this s not a free for all. only change what is absolutely required. You can make Thunderbird unusable setting these flags wrongly as your current issue makes clear.) and select properties.

In the properties dialog there will be three tabs "General information", "Retention Policy" and the one added by the addon "Flags" Select Flags and remove the outbox selection. As these are general folders they should have no special flags set.

The protocol I would follow is that after composing the message or reply (usually offline), I would then go to message|copy to >| and then choose the local folder to save the message to.

And that would be the problem, you are copying mail pending sending to another folder so it becomes an outgoing mail folder. You don't get to move or copy them until they have been send.

Perhaps I am wrong. I can not replicate the issue copying or moving mail on local folders from the outbox.

Thank you for your reply. The suggestion appears to be complex (no judgment). Before the most recent tbird update, I was able to direct tbird to also save a copy of a sent message to a designated local folder.

It appears that if I do that now, tbird will then classify that local folder as an outbox.

Message to developers. Why did you do this?

As a work around, when I send a message, I'll wait until it is sent and appears in the sent folder. I can then copy it to a designated local folder without having tbird then convert that particular local folder into an outbox.

This is adding complexity to what was once simple.

The flags manager addon was installed as instructed and resolved the issue. Thank you again.

Thanks for this solution. I was doing this as well and it locked me out of several folders. Appreciate the solution. I was able to remove the flags.  :)
