When I go to 'Send to" when emailing photos it defaults to Outlook rather than T/Bird and is inoperative. I note in the forum and also on Google this is a common problem. I have implemented many the solutions suggested and all the settings seem correct but the problem remains unsolved. Until recently this was not an issue, so I would appreciate assistance.

General Info as per MS info: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/shell/start-menu-reg The subkey HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail describes the email client that is started when the user clicks the E-mail icon on the Start menu. The subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail describes the email applications that are installed on the system, as well as the default email application. If the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail is blank or missing, the default value defined in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail is used to select the email application that appears on the Start menu.

re : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Clients\Mail The image you posted shows that a Value has not been set. I was expecting it to say 'Mozilla Thunderbird' because you said you had already followed instructions. When you click on 'OK' does the value get set as 'Mozilla Thunderbird'?

The HKEY_CURRENT_USER (above) should override the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE setting below.

Exit Thunderbird if it is running.

Access registry editor as before: Check the : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail setting. Under the 'Name' column - double click on 'Default' to open an 'Edit String' window OR right click on 'Default' and select 'Modify'. Where it says 'Value data:' clear the contents and type: Mozilla Thunderbird see image below

Can you confirm you have Thunderbird set as default - see 2nd image below - do you see the same ?

re : I have implemented many the solutions suggested and all the settings seem correct I presume you mean you have checked to see what is set up as default mail client.

  • In search you typed : default
  • then selected 'Default apps'
  • Under Choose default applications, 'Email' shows it is 'Thunderbird'.

Check this registry setting:

  • In search type: Registry
  • select 'Registry Editor' to open.
  • you may get a prompt asking if ok to change settings, click on yes

Locate

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Clients\Mail
  • Data column should say: Mozilla Thunderbird

If it does not say Mozilla Thunderbird:

  • under the 'Name' column - double click on 'Default' to open an 'Edit String' window OR right click on 'Default' and select 'Modify'.
  • Where it says 'Value data:' clear the contents and type: Mozilla Thunderbird
  • click on OK

In Thunderbird email Send to defaults to Outlook and I can't email photos Thanks for your guidance so far

I checked default mail client set correctly. I followed your registry instructions Data column did not say Moz T/B so under Value data I typed Mozilla Thunderbird and Send to still comes up with Outlook settings

re: Data column did not say Moz T/B so under Value data I typed Mozilla Thunderbird

Assuming you have not got a spelling mistake - exit Thunderbird and restart the computer.

if issue persists after a restart of computer, please post an image which shows the Value and location of: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Clients\Mail

re :and I can't email photos

You can email your photos as attachments using Thunderbird. Open a new 'Write' window Create email. Click on 'Attach' and then select the image/photo you want to send.
