Email folders not showing new mail until I open folder

recently changed computers and installed thunderbird... set up multiple email accounts... I have a bunch of email sorting rules in force on the server... my problem is that the emails won't show up in the folders until I click on the folder... I need to know BEFORE I click on the folder... I can't sit and click on every folder... any advise, this has never been a problem before?

If you right-click the folder, Properties, and check the box 'When getting new messages...', do the folders then indicate new mail?
