I got a beta version of thunderbird imposed on me. I finally figured out how the restore my old profile but thunderbird now will not connect to firefox when I click on a link in an email. I have tried all the obvious work-arounds and they just will not work. I tried downloading a new install as a last resort and it will not load until I do a new setup which I am sure will trash everything I had before. I have an existing thunderbird install of 68.10.0 on another machine which works just fine (so far). If someone can tell me how to get back to a usable version without having to recreate all my folders, contacts etc. I would be grateful. Dave Driscoll

I would suggest you run the install you already have and see if it helps. This is not a Microsoft product so account settings and data are not affected by an install. However some integration settings to the registry are affected by an install, which is why I say try it.

Before I went to do the install I went to save my local folders and discovered that Thunderbird had already deleted all my local folders even before beginning the install. I make monthly backups so I have a backup of my local folders as of Feb 1. Since the damage was already done I went ahead and installed 78.7.1 which did solve the not connecting to the browser issue but now I have lost all my email records. I tried copying the backup to ~/snap/thunderbird/common/Local Folders but the new Thunderbird can't see them. I there some way to get my folders back?

~/snap/thunderbird/common/Local Folders does not sound like a default location. I would expect ~/thunderbird

Perhaps you need to tell more about your customizations.

This is the default location. I have done no customization tho it may be peculiar to Ubuntu 20.04. Still, the issue is how to reload saved local folders *.msf etc into a new installation. Thanks, Dave Driscoll

'snap' - thats new in Ubuntu 20.04 Am I correct in assuming 'snap' means you have downloaded/installed Thunderbird which was offered as one of the Ubuntu apps? In other words, you have not downloaded Thunderbird from the official website.

~/snap/thunderbird/ Sounds like that 'snap' thing is running Thunderbird in something like a 'sandbox' so cannot use links to open anything. It might have defaulted to that location, but it is not the standard Thunderbird default location for profiles.

Are you able to uninstall that 'unbuntu snap version' and download and install from this webpage: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

Then you updated at some point to Ubuntu 20.04, at this moment I'm not aware of when this occurred or whether the update actually effected current running programs such as Thunderbird.

Snap does not place thunderbird profile folders in the default location and it seems to be some type of sandbox, so without really understanding 'snap', it seems that running in a sandbox situation may be blocking any linking with other programs.

What is unknown is whether your browser is also running within snap and if that would help?

Do I presume that you have decided not to uninstall the snap version and not to download the up to date versio from the official webpage ?
