you can close the tabs by right clicking the folder tab and selecting close other tabs

You can delete them by clicking on them in the mail lists and pressing delete. Holding Ctrl allows indovidual mail selections. when they are clicked with a mouse. Holding shift changes the selection to all mails between the selected one and where you click. Ctrl+A selected everything showing in the list.
