"inform about delivery status" & "request delivery confirmation"

"request delivery confirmation" - this option works fine, but the recipient has to confirm it manually. And not in all cases, e.g. google servers do not allow read acknowledgment.

"inform about delivery status" - but this option has no effect. Nothing happens when you select it. What is it actually for? A normal e-mail program can "ask" the servers to report the delivery status?
